Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo

In the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference (4/3/11), Elder Lynn G. Robbins gave a masterful talk about the difference in “Being” vs “Doing”.  I have included a link to the video here, in case you were “resting your eyes” by the time he spoke.

Elder Robbins has given some tremendous talks in years past, including “Agency & Anger”. I highly recommend reading his past teachings.
This year, Elder Robbins taught about the dangers of hypocrisy and self-deception by focusing on the words Be and Do – emphasizing the importance of Being, rather than just Doing.  I loved it: It is a game changer.
However, as soon as he finished, I fell into an unintended consequence: After all the talk about Do & Be, I had a flashback to my earliest years watching Romper Room.  In case you are one of those young, deprived souls who never got to experience Romper Room, it was a syndicated kid’s show with songs and skits for young kids.  I grew up in Utah, in the 60’s, and for me, the hostess was “Miss Julie”.  I was in love with her.
(Until today, I thought her name was actually Julie. Turns out it was Edna Anderson Taylor. Maybe Julie was a good idea after all.) By now you might be saying: MMM, what does this have to do with Do & Be? Patience!
There was a theme song for Romper Room that played every day. I knew all the words, and most little kids I knew could sing the entire song without a hitch. It was called “Do Be a Do-Bee”.
So, just for you, I found the song.  Because I’m thoughtful like that.
Here it is. Just do your best to be a good Do-Bee. That’s all the thanks I need.

  2. I remember so many of the Romper Room songs. It wasn’t until tonight that I discovered that Miss Julie wasn’t the only Romper Room Teacher. It took me a while to find her then I discovered what her real name was. I watched that show faithfully every morning before school. I am now a teacher currently working on my masters degree and a question arose about technology and young children. My first thought came back to Miss Julie. I hope some day to have a legacy like she does. I pray I can impact a few lives as much as she did in her teaching career.

  3. I also enjoyed Elder Robbins talk….However on the other topic… I don’t remember much except My name never got called with the mirror bit… (early 8O’S)

  4. Great. Like I don’t already feel old. I guess some of you “kids” just missed out entirely. But it isn’t too late to learn the song, and “incorporate it into our daily lives.”

  5. I have no idea who you are talking about…
But Elder Robbins talk was my favorite this Conference. It was something I really needed!

  6. Totally remember aspiring to being a good do-bee. Did the Utah version have the creepy graphics when Ms. Whoever held up the mirror? The Arizona version did and it still creeps me out just thinking about it.

  7. Are you sure you don’t work with me here at the hospital? We were just talking about Miss Julie a couple weeks ago. Thanks for the memories!

  8. I remember Miss Julie! I have a photo of my brother and me with her — she is interviewing my brother for a possible appearance on Romper Room; it’s clear that all I’m interested in is the candy that she was passing out.
